Fisher & Paykel Appliances Global and Haier Australasia Headquarters

The new Fisher & Paykel Appliances Global and Haier Australasia Headquarters in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland brings research, design, engineering, advanced testing and workplace teams together in one purpose-built campus.

Designed by RTA Studio, the 22,779 m² campus comprises three principal buildings: a three-level workplace, a two-level research, development and testing facility, and car and bike parking with associated facilities. The campus has capacity for 600 people and includes specialist laboratories and product testing environments designed to replicate conditions across international markets.

 For ASSA ABLOY, the project was an opportunity to demonstrate its Total Opening Solutions approach: considering doors, architectural hardware and entrance automation together rather than as separate components. This brought together the expertise and product portfolios of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions, ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems and Pacific Doors.

A coordinated approach to specification

Working closely with RTA Studio through the specification process, ASSA ABLOY brought together doors, entrance automation and architectural hardware to meet the varied access and compliance requirements across the campus.

The specification spanned fire and acoustic doors, automated sliding and swing doors, locks, closers, pull handles and levers in a variety of styles and finishes, giving the design team the flexibility to select the right solution for each space while maintaining consistency across the project.

Making large openings feel effortless

Some of the frameless sliding doors are substantial, requiring an operator capable of handling their scale without compromising the experience of the people using them.

The ASSA ABLOY SL500 sliding door operator provides the power required while delivering smooth, seamless operation. The result is simple: regardless of the size of the door, people can move through the space with ease.

That human experience is central to the Total Opening Solutions approach. Behind each opening may be a combination of door, hardware, automation and technical expertise, but for the person using the building, it should simply work.

Tailored solutions for specialist environments

The specialist testing environments within the Fisher & Paykel campus also presented requirements where standard solutions were not always appropriate. Fisher & Paykel describes these facilities as part of a campus designed to bring research, industrial design, engineering and advanced testing into closer connection.

A standout example was the anechoic chamber. For this space, Pacific Doors designed a custom 100 mm deep door panel offering <XSTC> acoustic performance rating, with the architectural hardware adapted to accommodate the additional depth and weight.

The result demonstrates the strength of considering the entire opening as a system rather than treating the door and its hardware as separate components.

The Fisher & Paykel campus demonstrates the scale and versatility that can be achieved by bringing specialist expertise together.

From architectural hardware used hundreds of times each day, to automated frameless entrances, fire and acoustic doors, and bespoke solutions for highly specialised testing environments, each opening responds to a different need while contributing to the building as a whole.

 Bringing together ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions, ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems and Pacific Doors enabled a coordinated approach to doors, entrance systems and architectural hardware across the project.

Total Opening Solutions is about more than individual products. It’s about bringing every element of an opening together so it works seamlessly as part of the architecture, creating spaces that work better for the people who use them every day.

The campus itself has been designed around connecting people, disciplines and ways of working, supporting Fisher & Paykel's next generation of home innovation from Aotearoa New Zealand.
